Environmental Stewardship

New Gold strives to efficiently use resources and minimize impacts to the environment in all our activities. Our stewardship ethic guides our approach across the full life-cycle of our activities, from exploration through to closure. Across the company, New Gold uses robust monitoring programs to maintain a high level of knowledge on environmental impacts associated with our activities. Using this knowledge, we are well-equipped to determine management approaches that minimize our environmental impacts.

Using a proactive risk management approach, New Gold has developed and implemented Environmental Management Standards that are based on internationally-recognized best practices. These standards provide the framework for site-level management systems, which are tailored to ensure that each site:

  • Adopts systems that ensure compliance with permits and other commitments;
  • Adopts a consistent approach to identifying and controlling environmental risks;
  • Identifies and appropriately manages their specific environmental aspects; and
  • Tracks progress through audits and assessments.

Each site has compiled a site-specific Significant Environmental Risks register. This register allows internal company oversight of risk management activities, to test the adequacy and effectiveness of site level controls and response planning. Additionally, all sites are required to have an external audit, peer audit or self-assessment annually. In 2017, these risks were reviewed and/or audited at all sites.

Our approaches to environmental management are discussed in detail in the following sections.
